National Nutrition Month

City Schools is proud to celebrate National Nutrition Month, a time to highlight the importance of making informed food choices and developing healthy eating habits. This month offers an opportunity for students, families, and staff to learn about balanced nutrition, explore new foods, and embrace lifestyle practices that support overall well-being.

City Schools provides healthy breakfast and lunch options to all students at no cost. Our Food & Nutrition Services team also prioritizes teaching students about healthy eating, nutrition, cooking, and more through Farm to School education based at our district farm, Great Kids Farm.

In 2025, City Schools received the Healthy Meals Incentives Recognition Award from the USDA Food and Nutrition Service and Action for Healthy Kids. This award recognizes efforts to integrate Farm to School education with our school meals and Wellness Policy, helping students learn where their food comes from while enjoying healthy, nutritious meals every day.

School menus are developed months in advance to meet federal nutrition standards while appealing to students’ tastes. Behind every meal served in City Schools cafeterias is a dedicated team balancing flavor, nutrition, and compliance with federal guidelines. To help with that balance, the Food & Nutrition team is seeking student feedback on the menu. Students can share their thoughts until March 27, 2026.

City Schools remains committed to supporting student health and wellness in every school, every day.

Nutrition History of the Month

National Nutrition Month has its roots in the 1970s as a public education campaign dedicated to promoting the importance of healthy eating and lifestyle choices. It was created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the world’s largest organization of food and nutrition professionals, to focus attention on the role of nutrition in overall health and well-being.

Initially launched as a week-long event, it expanded to a month-long observance in March to provide more opportunities for education and engagement. Each year, National Nutrition Month adopts a specific theme that emphasizes practical ways for individuals and families to make informed food choices, balance their diets, and adopt healthy habits. This year’s theme is “Discover the Power of Nutrition.”
