Girl empowerment boosted through strategic City Schools and Girls on the Run Great Chesapeake partnership
This fall, City Schools nurtured confidence and a sense of belonging for 81 girls through a partnership with Girls on the Run Greater Chesapeake organization.
Participants reflected on the program, which combines physical education with social-emotional learning:
“Girls on the Run has helped me with my confidence and loving myself!” - Layla, 4th grade
“Because of Girls on the Run, I know that I am awesome and proud of myself!” - Janeya, 3rd grade
“Because of Girls on the Run, I know that I am stronger than ever.” - Katelyn, 4th grade
The four-school program is led by City Schools staff members Tonisha Montgomery, coordinator – athletics, and Miguel-Rikki Vincent, educational specialist II - middle school athletics. Participating City Schools include Hampden Elementary/Middle School, Maree G. Farring Elementary/Middle School, and Sinclair Lane Elementary School. The program also includes the SEED School of Maryland.
Through Girls on the Run Greater Chesapeake, trained volunteer coaches facilitate lessons that focus on physical activity with life skills development, including managing emotions, fostering friendships, and expressing empathy.
