With 33 years of dedicated service in public education, Twanda Pickett brings a wealth of experience and a tailored leadership style to her new role as principal of Westport Academy.
Pickett’s journey in education began in North Carolina, where she dedicated 13 years as a classroom teacher. Her commitment to students and educators brought her to Baltimore City Public Schools, where she has served the past two decades serving in a variety of roles, including teacher, assistant principal, and now principal.
At the heart of her leadership philosophy is a simple but powerful belief: Every child has the ability to shine.
“I am most looking forward to creating an environment where our staff, families and students work together to unlock that inner brilliance in every child,” Pickett said. “I look forward to supporting our teachers with the resources and encouragement they need to help every student thrive academically and socially.”
For Pickett, leadership is not about standing at the top of an organization and giving directives. It is about being present, building trust, and creating the conditions for others to succeed.
As she begins this new chapter, Pickett brings a personal sense of purpose. Faith, she says, plays a quiet, foundational role in her life, guiding how she loves, respects, and shows up for people every day.
