City Schools celebrates Pride Month each June by recognizing the history, contributions, and experiences of the LGBTQ+ community. Pride Month is a time to honor the individuals and advocates who have worked toward equality, dignity, and inclusion while also celebrating the diversity that strengthens our school communities. City Schools remains committed to fostering welcoming and inclusive environments where every student feels seen, valued, and supported.
The month traces its origins to the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in New York City, when members of the LGBTQ+ community protested against discriminatory treatment and police raids at the Stonewall Inn. A year later, the first Pride Week and Pride Parade took place in New York on Christopher Street, organized by Brenda Howard and a group of other activists. The parade would amass a crowd numbering into the thousands and stretched 15 city blocks.
In 1999, President Bill Clinton issued the first presidential proclamation recognizing June as Gay and Lesbian Pride Month. In 2009, President Barack Obama expanded the recognition to include the broader LGBTQ+ community, officially proclaiming June as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month.
