History of the month
School Board Appreciation Month, typically held in January, started nationally around 1995 through the efforts of state associations to honor volunteer board members for setting policy, managing budgets, and ensuring local control of public education. 
Did you know?
School boards are a long-standing American institution with one of the first being formed at the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1647. Baltimore's school board history traces back to 1828, creating a separate city system from the county with the establishment of the Board of Commissioners of Public Schools to oversee early free schools.
