From the boardroom to the real world: interning with BGE

MERVO students meet with executives as part of internship program

When executives from BGE filled a high-rise conference room in downtown Baltimore this past spring, they took notes and listened intently. They were captivated and engaged by the speakers. After all, the speakers had unique insight and perspective - they were City Schools students!

The meeting was a part of BGE’s eight-year partnership with Mergenthaler Vocational Technical High School (MERVO), through which 11 students are interning with the company this summer. At the multi-hour meeting, BGE executives and former interns spoke about their experiences in the program, how it helped them, what their goals are, and how future iterations of the program can support them more.

The students’ impressive presentation reflects their journey and the process of this partnership. It began after MERVO educators introduced students to the internship opportunity after they performed well in trades like pre-engineering and carpentry. From there, interested students work with educators to revise their resumes, practice interviews, and go on a field trip to BGE to get a sense of the program. BGE executives also visit MERVO to interview candidates.

“These students immediately understand this incredible opportunity, and they step up to grab it - whether that’s by coming in on weekends or dedicating time after school,” explained Principal Tricia Lawrence. “They really do shine and have so much to offer the world. Their success in this program shows that.”

For many students, that opportunity means more than a summer job. Over the last few years, 19 former MERVO interns have been hired by BGE after they graduated. This year, MERVO student interns are working with BGE crews on things like meters, overhead and underground electrical, Computer Assisted Design, and mechanics. These experiences allow them to develop the skills that can result in meaningful careers and lives.

“When students find out they’ve been selected, their excitement is on full display - cheers, tears, and celebration,” explained Shawn Kerr, Pre-engineering teacher and mentor at MERVO. “These positions start at $25-35 an hour. It can be a life-changing opportunity.”

The former MERVO students are eager to give back. “Every summer, BGE holds a job fair at the Baltimore Museum of Industry,” explained Kerr. “Our students walk up and see MERVO grads manning tables on behalf of BGE, interested in hiring them. These graduates have been where current students are and they want to help. It’s incredible to see.”
