Garrett Heights Elementary/Middle School is proud to offer a variety of interscholastic athletic programs for students in grades 6–8.
The mission of the Garrett Heights Athletics Program is to build community, teamwork and shared responsibility among students while strengthening school spirit and unity. Our athletic program promotes academic excellence, good sportsmanship, personal discipline and integrity while following all Baltimore City Public Schools athletic rules and regulations.
## Why School Athletics Matter
Physical health is an essential part of a student’s overall well-being. In addition to participating in physical education during the school day, eligible middle school students may compete on school athletic teams outside regular school hours.
Participation in school athletics can help students:
- Improve physical fitness
- Develop strength, coordination and endurance
- Build confidence, independence and emotional maturity
- Strengthen communication and teamwork skills
- Develop positive relationships with teammates and coaches
- Improve decision-making and problem-solving skills
- Learn responsibility, discipline and time management
- Experience the value of commitment and perseverance
Garrett Heights athletic teams also benefit the entire school community by promoting:
- Good sportsmanship and respectful competition
- School pride, morale and student involvement
- A greater appreciation for athletics and physical wellness
- Stronger connections among students, families, staff, alumni, partners and friends of GHEMS
