🌎 Celebrating World Kindness Day at GHEMS
Spreading Joy, One Kind Act at a Time
Every year on November 13, people around the world come together to celebrate World Kindness Day—a special reminder to show compassion to others, to ourselves, and to the world around us.
According to the Greater Good Science Center (GGSC) at the University of California, Berkeley, kindness and happiness are deeply connected. Their research highlights something they call a “positive feedback loop”—meaning that being kind makes you happy, and being happy makes you want to be even kinder. It’s a beautiful cycle that benefits everyone!
At Garrett Heights Elementary Middle School (GHEMS), we’re always looking for ways to build a stronger, more caring community. One of our goals in the “26 Opportunities to Focus on Happiness in 2026” campaign, coming next year, is to encourage everyone to perform one random act of kindness each month.
With World Kindness Day and the holiday season fast approaching, our GHEMS Community Engagement Team thought this was the perfect time to share a few ideas for spreading a little extra joy:
💛 Write a kind note to a classmate, colleague, or neighbor.
💛 Hold the door or offer to help carry something for someone.
💛 Compliment someone—genuinely and from the heart.
💛 Donate gently used clothing or toys to a local shelter.
💛 Say “thank you” to a teacher, bus driver, or cafeteria staff member.
💛 Pay it forward at a coffee shop or corner store.
No act of kindness is too small. Each gesture creates a ripple effect that can inspire others to do the same.
As we move through this season of giving, let’s keep kindness at the center of everything we do—at school, at home, and throughout our Baltimore City community. Together, we can make every day feel like World Kindness Day. 💫
