Overview

The System Learning & Development team in the Office of Human Capital is pleased to announce the launch of a pilot initiative in January 2025: the New Hire Experience (NHE). This suite of services was developed in response to a need in our district to provide high-quality onboarding experiences for new employees at City Schools.

Why

The experience of new hires matters.

A comprehensive, high-quality onboarding experience fosters a sense of belonging, accelerates productivity, and creates a positive impression that yields better employee engagement, job satisfaction, and retention—which ultimately impacts student success.

How

Collaboration & Consistency: Our goal is to collaborate across all offices & schools to build collective capacity to welcome staff and provide an effective New Hire Experience plus a supportive employee journey for the first year.

Connection & Clarity: The programming and suite of supports offer valuable opportunities for new hires to connect with other new hires and key staff, gain clarity on their roles, become oriented to City Schools’ culture, and complete mandatory compliance training.

Care: Components are carefully designed using industry research, stakeholder input and lessons learned, principles of adult learning, equity, and accessibility practices—and grounded in City Schools mission and values.

WHAT & WHEN

NHE includes four major components: First Day Experience, Onboarding Toolkit, New Hire Experience Manager Training, and 30/60/90 Day New Hire Surveys. This suite of services will be rolled out to district office employees at the beginning of Winter 2025 and expanded to schools by merging programming with New Educator Summer Institute in Summer 2025.

Winter 2025: District Office Pilot

First Day Experience
We are excited to announce the re-launch of a one-day, in-person orientation that aims to make new hires feel welcomed, valued, and connected with the City Schools community, and familiar with resources available to them. Participants will be introduced to our Blueprint, mission, and key representatives across City Schools; ask questions and get important information and complete designated compliance training to prepare them for success in their role. Each employee will attend First Day Experience on their start date, the first Monday of the pay period.

New Hire Experience Manager Training
Hiring managers will have access to a series of short, interactive, and user-friendly asynchronous training modules that will introduce the NHE initiative, connect them with the “why,” and provide guidance for leading an effective onboarding experience for new hires----beginning before the employee’s start date, continuing through their first day and first week experience, and culminating in the crucial 30, 60, and 90 day window of their new hire’s employment. All hiring managers will have access to these modules in Blackboard beginning in January 2025, and those managers who are actively hiring will receive an invitation to complete the training and get support before their employee’s start date.

Onboarding Toolkit
Hiring managers will also receive a digital toolkit that complements the training above, including sample checklists and templates that will help managers forge strong relationships, provide a positive experience, and set their new employees up for success during their first 90 days. New hires will also receive a condensed toolkit with essential information and resources, and what to expect during their first 90 days.

30/60/90 Day New Hire Surveys
City Schools is adopting the industry standard best practice of implementing touchpoints with new hires during the crucial 90-day employment window through 30/60/90-day surveys. These surveys will go live following the NHE kickoff, in February 2025.

Summer 2025: Expansion to New Educator Summer Institute (NESI)

In summer 2025, NHE will be available to school-based staff, beginning with providing First Day Experience for all new hires attending the New Educator Summer Institute. The System Learning & Development team in Human Capital and the Professional Learning team in Academics are partnering to align our strategy and secure the resources necessary to effectively welcome our educators. Stakeholders will be consulted on an initial proposal to offer First Day Experience on four days the week prior to NESI, with educators grouped by CLN to ensure balanced attendance and a high-quality, interactive experience.
