School Commissioners approve 2023-24 budget for Baltimore City Public Schools

The Baltimore City Board of School Commissioners approved a $1.7 billion budget for Baltimore City Public Schools (City Schools) for the 2023-24 school year during its regular meeting tonight. The budget will now go to the Baltimore City Council for approval. 

The Fiscal Year 2024 Operating Budget outlines the district’s priorities for the coming school year, which were informed by a series of stakeholder events and surveys. The information includes how the district has invested - and will continue to invest - ESSER funding in support of the district's goals. 

Areas of investment for the coming year, include:  

  • $25 million in high-dosage tutoring, plus an additional $1.5 million in tutoring specifically for math
  •  $13.3 million for literacy coaches at schools 
  • $1.6 million for AP course offerings 
  • $45 million in extended learning programs, including $25 million for summer programming at traditional schools
  •  $45 million for more social workers and psychologists 
  • $7 million in our Expanded School Behavioral Health Program 
  • $2 million for athletics programming at traditional schools that receive Concentration of Poverty funds
  • $38.5 million for arts teachers 
  • $2 million for the Re-engagement Center 
  • $2.4 million in supports for students experiencing homelessness 
  • $6.8 million for health suite upgrades at schools 
  • $4 million to improve our digital security, technologyinfrastructure, and expand Wi-Fi access points 

"With the FY24 budget, City Schools will renew and recommit to educating the whole child by investing in exciting new programs that provide a solid academic learning experience for our students. Money will be dedicated to initiatives with proven student success,” said Sonja Brookins Santelises, CEO Baltimore City Public Schools. “The budget is grounded in our previous successful academic strategies and informed by our constant attention to identify what works best for our students.”
