    Dear Parents and Guardians,

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself and give you an overview of the upcoming year.  I am a highly qualified teacher with 14 years of experience in education.  This is my 8th year in Baltimore City Public Schools.  I am certified in grades K-12. I have a bachelors’ degree in English, a masters’ degree in Public Administration and a masters’ degree in Education and a doctorate in Educational Leadership and Curriculum. I have received International Baccalaureate MYP training as well as Springboard training for the Gifted and Talented program.  I have experience teaching 5th-11th grades but my primary experience is in middle school.

Prior to becoming a teacher, I served in the United States Air Force.  I retired after 23 years in the military and becoming a teacher was a natural extension of my service to my country. I have lived in every section of the United States and all over the world.  I lived 10 years outside of the United States; 4 years in the Far East and 6 years in Europe. I also went to war after 9-11.  I bring a global perspective to my classroom and it is filled with many artifacts from my travels.

My classroom is structured, disciplined and fun. I expect excellence and I will challenge your child to do their very best.  Developing good communication with you is a key component to your child’s success.  My favorite phone calls are to tell you when your child has had an excellent day. Calling you when your child has had a disciplinary issue is a last resort. My email is SAMoore@bcps.k12.md.us or you may leave a message with the office.  I return all phone calls and emails within 24 hours. If you would like a conference please email me and we can set up a convenient time

Your child will be assigned homework on a weekly basis. Your child will also be required to read a book a month outside of the assigned novel in class.  They will be given a book report form to complete for the monthly novel of their choice.  I have plenty of books in my classroom your child may sign out if you are unable to go to the library. Your child will also have a project a quarter to complete. This project is aligned to the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program. Your child will be provided all the materials.

My goal is for your child to excel in both reading and writing. My expectation is for your student to read and write on or above grade level. I follow the BCPSS curriculum, the IB learner profile and unit themes. I expect your student to be prepared to learn and to be respectful. This will be a challenging and exciting year.
