Celebrating Black History Month

Experience Corps Team Brings Local Author to the ELC

Black History Month This February, members of the City Springs Experience Corps Team treated the children in the Early Learning Center (ELC) to a Black History Month program. A display was set up in the ELC multi-purpose room with posters of many historical black figures. Ms. Bryant taught the children about Baltimore's own late Mary Carter Smith, author, poet, griot, and former Baltimore City school teacher. Ms. Taylor also recited a poem celebrating the life of abolitionist Harriet Tubman.

The program also included a visit from a special guest, local children’s book author Mr. Waymon LeFall. Mr. LeFall recently published the book “The Legend of Jocko: Child Hero of the American Revolution.” The book tells the true story of Jocko, a 12-year-old black boy whose sacrifice helped General George Washington during the Revolutionary War. The students loved hearing Mr. LeFall tell Jocko’s story and enjoyed meeting a real-life author!
