Summer Programs for Elementary Students
City Schools thanks Target for support for this program.
Explore the world of undersea animals, dig into why some species are facing extinction, learn how animals depend on one another...all while practicing reading and writing!
This is a special program for students who are in kindergarten to grade 3 in 2012–13, and who need extra support in reading. It opens with a week of SuperKids camp, including swimming and other outdoor activities, field trips, music, drama and more — all with a reading theme. Then, from July 1 to 26, children participate in a half-day reading program designed to spark interest and achievement with hands-on activities to improve skills and comprehension. A special focus is animals and their habitats, so students can improve reading fiction and nonfiction — while getting knowledge and research skills they can use in all their classes next year. In the afternoon, there are more fun enrichment activities, in a summer camp atmosphere.
Students who love investigating, experimenting and creating will love this hands-on program focused on science and engineering. Students will study motion by designing race cars; learn principles of life science by growing plants and working with bugs, worms and hermit crabs; explore the relationships between the sun, moon and earth; and solve engineering problems by building boats to clean oil spills and designing windmills to generate clean energy. At the end of the program, students can show off their new learning with displays and team competitions. Breakfast and lunch are provided.
A full-day summer camp experience with a reading and math focus, offered by the Parks & People Foundation. Children participate in swimming and other outdoor activities, field trips, performing arts, music, drama and more — and learn at the same time.
In this hands-on program, students now in grades 4 to 7 spend the morning as project managers, working on ecosystems, city planning, engineering and design of habitats in space. The afternoon is full of enrichment activities, including sports and fitness, the arts or robotics. Read more here...
