English for Speakers of Other Languages Program

A child learning from a textbook

The English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Program provides English language
instruction for limited English proficient students. ESOL students are identified as limited English proficient using the state-sponsored LAS (Language Assessment Scale) Links, which is given to students for whom English is not their native or home language. Based on scores in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, students are placed in special language support classes.

The primary goal of the program is to develop students' English language proficiency so that they may achieve overall academic success. Students enrolled in the program receive ESOL instruction while also participating in the mainstream academic program. If ESOL instruction is not provided in a student's zoned school, the student's parents or guardians may request a transfer to the nearest ESOL Center.

For more information, you may contact the ESOL Program at 410-396-8544.
