Dear Parents and Guardians,
I would like to extend my warmest welcome to all of the families represented in my class. My name is Karen DiDonato and I will be your child’s second grade teacher. I am very excited to have the opportunity to work with your child this year. We will have many wonderful experiences and opportunities to learn and grow in the coming days.
In this letter you will find the information needed to ensure a smooth transition into second grade. Please take some time to read through the information and then sign below and return the tear off by Friday, September 4th.
Daily attendance is essential to the learning process so that your child receives valuable classroom instruction. The school day begins at 7:45 a.m. Students must be in the classroom by 7:50 or they will be marked late. If you child is late or absent, the Missed Work Policy is as follows:
· Tests and quizzes will be made up during resource or in class.
· Classwork or homework will usually be made up at home. All work sent home to be completed must be returned within 2 days of you child’s return to school or it will not be accepted.
Homework is necessary for practicing the skills learned in class. The homework will be copied and completed in their Homework Notebook. Worksheets and other important papers will be in their Take Home Folder. The children will receive a weekly math homework sheet that is due on Friday. Most nights they will have a spelling assignment due on the next day. They will also be required to read for a minimum of 15 minutes. Occasionally, students will also receive social studies, science, and health homework.
The classroom rules are as follows:
· Follow directions the first time they are given.
· Treat everyone with kindness and respect.
· Listen when someone is talking.
· Take care of our school and classroom.
· Work and play safely and quietly.
I use a stoplight system where each child starts the day on green-Ready to Learn. Each child has the opportunity to move up to blue-Fabulous if their behavior and/or effort exceed expectations. When a class rule is broken, the student will be verbally warned. If the student continues to not follow the rules, he or she will move their pin to yellow-Make Better Choices. If the student continues to not follow the rules, he or she will move their pin to red-Talk about a Consequence. I will have the child help me fill out the ‘Oops I was on red because’ form which will be sent home to parents to be signed and returned.
My grading policy is attached to this letter.
This year Hampden students will be following an A week and B week resource schedule. The schedule is as follows:

In two weeks Hampden will host Back to School Night on Monday, September 14th. At that time I will answer any questions and discuss a variety of topics about this school year. I am looking forward to working with you so we can help your child have a successful school year.
