Cross Country is a Title I Elementary/Middle School (CCEMS) that serves approximately 729 students in grades prekindergarten through eight. Located in Northwest Baltimore City, the student population is predominately African-American, but we are seeing our ESOL population growing substantially each year. The staff at Cross Country works in concert with students, parents, and community partners to provide a rigorous learning environment that accelerates and celebrates the academic achievement and social development of all students. We are proud to be associated with outstanding community partners such as CHAI (Comprehensive Housing Assistance Inc.) and FSNE (Maryland Food and Supplemental Nutrition Education). Our partners support our school initiatives and work closely with school staff to enhance our academic, extracurricular and green programs.
Cross Country works hard to keep it's green school status. In the past we have worked with Irvine Nature Center to clean up the Western Run Stream and create school gardens. This year, we added a school garden and outdoor classroom space that will provide more opportunities for teachers to take their students outside to learn. The following pages are a reflection of our commitment to bringing green practices, environmental education and environmental experiences to our children.
Teachers are encouraged to get students out of the classroom to connect with their community and to tackle real-world problems and work towards finding innovative solutions. Our application reflects the effort of everyone in our Cross Country family--students, teachers, administrators, staff and parents. We want our students to understand the importance of a clean environment. We want our students to care about what happens outside the classroom because you aren't going to take care about the environment if you don't have a connection. Our main areas of focus are pollution prevention, energy conservation, solid waste reduction, habitat restoration and building structures for learning about the environment. Each year, we get a little stronger and students become more committed to keeping Cross Country green and spreading the word to their families and the community.~Check out some of the things we are doing on our Weebly site!~
