What is OrchKids?
OrchKids is a year-round during and after school music program designed to create social change and nurture promising futures for youth in Baltimore City neighborhoods.
Under Baltimore Symphony Orchestra music director Marin Alsop’s artistic leadership and direction, OrchKids is the cornerstone of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s efforts to expand the Orchestra’s relevance within the broad and diverse Baltimore community. In collaboration with several community partners, including Baltimore City Public Schools, OrchKids provides music education, instruments, academic instruction and meals, as well as performance and mentorship opportunities, all at no cost to families. (www.orchkids.org)
OrchKids is inspired by Venezuela’s El Sistema, the music program founded by José Antonio Abreu that in only 40 years has transformed the lives of hundreds of thousands of children in the country’s most impoverished areas. El Sistema-inspired programs can now be found all over the world (www.sistemaglobal.org). The Baltimore Symphony’s OrchKids program is only one of up to 90 El Sistema-inspired programs from across the United States. (www.elsistemausa.org)
Currently, OrchKids works with five public schools in Baltimore City, serving approximately 750 children from pre-kindergarten through 8th grade. This 2014/15 school year will be OrchKids fourth year partnering with Highlandtown Elementary/Middle School #215.
