Overview of Title I, Part A
Title I Background and Purpose
Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA) is the largest federally funded education program.
In addition, the main goal of the Title I grant is to ensure that all children have a fair, equal and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education and reach, at a minimum, proficiency on challenging state academic achievement standards and assessments.
Title I, Part A is a federal program that provides financial assistance to local school systems and schools with high percentages of at-risk students to support the academic achievement of disadvantaged students. Title I funds are distributed to high poverty schools so the schools can;
· Provide additional academic support and learning opportunities to help low-achieving children master challenging curricula and meet state standards in core academic subjects.
· Title I funds supplement instruction in reading and mathematics, additional teachers to reduce class size, materials for instruction and professional development, professional development to improve instruction
· Ensure that parents have an opportunity to be involved in their child’s education and
· Supplement after school and summer programs to extend and reinforce the regular school curriculum.
There are two main models for serving students in a Title I school: Schoolwide programs and targeted assistance programs.
· Title I funds may be combined with other federal, state and local funds to upgrade the entire educational program of all students in the school. In contrast, Title I money in targeted assistance programs may only be used toprovide services to eligible children identified as having the greatest academic need. Both Schoolwide and Targeted Assistance programs must be based on proven effective means of improving student achievement and strategies to support parental involvement.

It’s in the form of Title 1 funding and we’re in the exciting season of re-launching a series of supportive measures to help our learners move from good to great. These include extra in classroom help called push-in services, more intensive individual tutoring called pull-out services as well as extended school day options!
