Calvin Rodwell Elementary School is in the Howard Park community on the corners of Liberty Heights Avenue and Hillsdale Road. The homes surrounding the school are comprised with a mixture of families ranging from middle to low income. The Howard Park community is in the planning stage of revitalization that is spearheaded by the BUILD Association. Some of the Calvin Rodwell partners include the Child First Authority/BUILD, which provides funding for our after-school program, 100 Black Men, Inc. and now the New Shop Rite Market just to name a few.
The school’s learning philosophy and curriculum is driven by those of the Baltimore City Public School System and the Maryland State Department of Education. However, the leadership Team in conjunction with the School Improvement Team have established unique ways to give life to those goals as described in the school’s daily opening exercise affirmation “We’re on our way to College”. The academic achievement of all students is accelerated by providing a staff that is highly qualified to teach the students. The staff, including the special educators, meet weekly in grade level team meetings to analyze student assessment data. This collaborative planning gives a more concrete focus on what needs to take place in their instructions. Our students also receive comprehensive instruction in the core subject area since their teachers departmentalize and or cluster from grades 1 through 5. Our Pre-k and k students are also provided with a rigorous program that includes Culinary Arts, Music and Technological awareness that the other students also receive. Students with special needs are included in all aspects of the curriculum with their appropriate accommodations.
