On July 7, 2011, eight Carver Vocational-Technical High School students set out on a week long journey to Xiamen, China, Baltimore's Sister City. The students are participants in an exchange program with the Xiamen Electronic Vocational School. This exchange program is a result of two years of preparation by Carver and the Xiamen School. In April 2010, the Xiamen school's principal and vice principal visited Baltimore and signed a "Sister School" agreement with Carver. Since then, the two schools have cooperated, mainly in their Chinese/English language studies. More than 20 students from each school are presently engaged in active pen-pal/email exchanges as a supplement to their formal language instruction. Carver has had a strong Chunese language program for the past several years taught by a native Chinese speaking teacher with a PhD. in Chinese language instruction.
