Be a Part of the Future: Express Yourself to Your State Representatives about the State Education Budget “A small group of thoughtful people could change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.” Margaret Mead These words are extremely important and are a call for each of us to do our part in helping change the world, the city and even the neighborhood that we live in. On Tuesday, January 26, 2010, Governor Martin O’Malley is presenting his state budget proposal to the Maryland Legislature. It is currently estimated that BILLIONS of dollars will be cut from the state education budget. This amounts to an average loss of nearly $200,000 from every school in the city. $200,000 from Wolfe Street Academy! Yet the budget has not been presented yet. The “small group of thoughtful people” that make up the Wolfe Street Academy community can help change the future. You can help change the future of educational funding in Maryland. But you must act now. Call the Governor’s Office (800-811-8336) or write the Governor to let him know that you want Maryland’s schools, Baltimore’s schools, and Wolfe Street Academy – a Baltimore City Public School – fully funded. Tell the Governor that you will not accept cuts to the education budget, to the future of your children, of your neighbors’ children. But you must act NOW! You must call NOW! You must write NOW! Do not delay. Once the Governor presents the budget, the legislature cannot add more money into it. We must get the message across to the Governor that the budget he presents must fully fund our schools and thus fully support the future of our children.
