Thomas Johnson Elementary Middle School is organized by grade level teams which include early childhood. The inclusion model is used to deliver special education services in grades pre-kindergarten through eight. Additional programming includes the Together at Three and Together at Four programs and ELE (Early Learning Environment) which provide self contained placements for those students requiring a more restrictive environment.
The Voluntary State Curriculum (VSC) is the document that identifies the Maryland Content Standards and aligns the standards with Maryland School Assessments. All Thomas Johnson Elementary Middle School teachers utilize the VSC to deliver instruction. Supporting the curriculum, the following programs are used throughout the grades: SRA’s Open Court Reading Program in grades PK-5., McDougal-Littell’s, Language of Literature in grades 6-8, Scott Foresman-Addison Wesley Math in grades K-5, and Pearson/Prentice Hall’s Connections in grades 6-8. In addition to the specified math programs, teachers use the online resources from Linda Eberhart’s Math Works. Elementary teachers, K-5, will instruct science using Houghton Mifflin’s Discovery Works and social studies using Macmillan/McGraw Hill.
