Mr. Saeed Hill
Saeed Hill, a Baltimore native and proud graduate of the Baltimore City Public Schools, has been an educator for 21 years. After three years of serving the Newport News Public Schools System, Mr. Hill returned to Baltimore, MD and taught mathematics at his alma mater, the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute. Mr. Hill currently holds a Masters of Arts in Leadership in Teaching and Administrator I and II Certification from the College of Notre Dame (MD).
Recognizing a need for academic enrichment within Baltimore City, Mr. Hill is the founder and executive director of Achieving Success through Knowledge (ASK, Inc.), a non-profit tutoring program. ASK provided middle school-aged youth exposure to performance-based tasks in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). This program provided Mr. Hill opportunities to refine his abilities for nurturing and preparing students for academic and social success. Additionally, Mr. Hill utilized his fundraising skills to secure support from the Open Society Institute – Baltimore and the Annie E. Casey Foundation.
During his tenure at Baltimore Talent Development (BTD) High School, Mr. Hill continued to explore effective means for developing students’ academic proficiencies and personal growth. At BTD, Mr. Hill implemented a “five-core values program,” an initiative created to develop positive social skills and improve school-wide climate and culture. Through the five-core values of respect, dedication, integrity, leadership, and perseverance, this program promoted high intellectual and ethical development for all students. The core values program garnered national recognition and was featured on the front page of USA Today, June 2007.
As the former principal of Northwestern High School in Baltimore City, Mr. Hill furthered developed the aforementioned five-core values program and implemented a tiered support system that provides students with explicit quarterly goals. These goals include student attendance, behavior, and course performance, and resulted in observable gains in students’ reading comprehension and scores (i.e., increase of one grade level). In addition, the support system has greatly contributed to a significant reduction in the suspension rate and improved school climate. The Maryland State Education Office has previously recognized the program’s positive results. Initiatives such as the five-core value program and the tiered support system have great potential for replication in varied school settings and across grade levels.
Mr. Hill has an unyielding belief that all students can be academically and socially successful when provided with positive and responsive learning environments that encourage exploration and critical thinking. He is committed to furthering the refinement of his programs in order to provide young people, and the educators that inspire them, with these learning environments.
