Placement Events
Baltimore City Public School System (BCPSS) conducts several placement events throughout the early spring into summer. Placement events are “by invitation only.” In order to secure an invitation, you must have submitted an online application and be recommended into the teacher candidate pool.
Placement events offer the best opportunity for candidates to meet with principals and regional hiring representatives who are hiring to fill vacancies at their schools. The ultimate goal of these events is to create matches between all incoming teachers and schools, ensuring that all of Baltimore City’s students have access to committed, qualified teachers. Securing a school placement is unlike most other hiring processes. Various placement opportunities to interview with numerous school administrators are available to those in the teacher candidate pool.
Potential interview opportunities may include:
- Referrals made by the Human Resources Department to school principals.
- Large-scale placement events that feature individual interviews with schools.
- Subject-specific job fairs and interview days.
- School based interviews posted online.
- Direct interview scheduling done by principals.
The BCPSS firmly believes in making good matches between the principal and teacher; therefore, the interview opportunities available to candidates are beneficial to both district administrators and teachers.
We strongly encourage those teachers who do not yet live in the Baltimore area to participate in one or all interviewing opportunities. Although it is not required, it is suggested that candidates arrange to stay the following day or two to visit schools and get to know the city of Baltimore.
Teacher Job Fair & School Site Interviews
BCPSS will host its first placement event of the season on May 12, 2008. All BCPSS schools will be in attendance to showcase their schools. Candidates will have the opportunity to meet the principal and other school administrators, learn more about schools’ academic programs and activities, as well as schedule interviews for the next day at the school site. Unlike BCPSS’s traditional placement fairs, interviews will not be scheduled into this fair’s agenda, however, not discouraged to take place during the event. It is strongly encouraged that teacher candidates schedule site interviews for the following day at the school on May 13, 2008. Candidates may choose as many schools as desired to schedule site interviews.
Materials to bring to the Job Fair:
- At least ten (10) copies of your resume.
- Notebook and pen
- Email Invitation
- Official or copies of transcripts, test scores, state certification, and reference forms.
We strongly encourage candidates to make accommodations to stay the following day. Unfortunately, the BCPSS does not have the ability to assist candidates in making travel arrangements to visit Baltimore. There are numerous internet site that can provide prospective visitors with great information on how to get to Baltimore, what to do and see, and where to stay.
Getting to Baltimore
Placement Fairs
BCPSS will be hosting two placement fairs this season. (Event dates are posted above.) Candidates will have the opportunity to meet and interview with school and district staff. School principals or hiring representatives will conduct interviews on a first-come, first-served basis. There is limited time to schedule interviews since the event’s agenda includes a structured schedule for interviews.
You will have the opportunity to interview with several schools in various fashions: some principals and/or hiring committees may ask you to sign up for a specific time slot, while others may ask you to wait in line or even interview several teachers as a group. Some interviews may be as brief as 15 minutes.
Possible Outcomes of a Fair
- You receive and accept an offer from a school (make a school commitment) on the spot.
- You conduct school follow-up visits.
- You do not receive an offer or schedule a follow-up visit.
(The Department of Human Resources is committed to assisting our teacher candidates on identifying schools to contact for possible placement.)
