Advanced Middle School Programs

The Advanced middle school programs provide identified students in grades six through eight with differentiated instruction. It is designed for students who learn at a faster pace and who benefit from greater depth and breadth in instruction.

To meet the unique needs of students, the Advanced middle school programs  provide opportunities to:

  • Refine skills in reading, writing, and computing
  • Develop advanced competencies in higher-level thinking skills, research skills, independent study skills and problem-solving skills
  • Meet regularly with intellectual peers
  • Develop a sense of responsibility to self, others and the community
  • Provide learning experiences differentiated in the following ways:
    - acceleration (compacted, faster paced)
    - novelty (material not available in the regular program)
    - depth and breadth (extension and elaboration of regular curricular learnings)
  • Foster positive attitudes toward learning

Identification of Potential Applicants

The identification procedures and criteria are implemented throughout the BCPSS and are directly related to the academically challenging program being provided.  An Application for Admission to Advanced Middle School Programs must be completed and submitted to the Office of Student Placement by the advertised deadline date.  Students may qualify for the programs on the basis of objective data including the following:

  • High report card grades of E or G in grades 4 and 5
  • Scores in at least the 90th percentile in reading and math on a standardized assessment that is not older than one (1) academic school year.
  • Attendance rate of at least 95 percent in grade 5
