Student Assessment

The Student Assessment program is comprised of all testing pursuant to NCLB and local initiatives. NCLB, as administered under MSDE, is composed of the Maryland School Assessment (MSA)

A Student with a teacher smilinggiven in grades 3 - 8 and 10. Students with low cognitive abilities  take the ALT-MSA.  In grade 10 the HSA geometry and English 10 scores are used for MSA.

As part of local initiatives, the System administers the TerraNova  in the fall to 8th graders as part of the admissions process for high school.  In spring, 1st and 2nd grade students take the Stanford 10 as part of the promotion policy.

Beginning in 2003-04, the System began a major initiative to launch quarterly assessments in mathematics.  This initiative was continued and expanded to reading language arts in 2004-05.
The High School Assessments (HSA) are given in algebra biology, geometry, English 10, and government.  Students entering 9th grade in 2005-06 must earn passing grades on the HSA tests as part of the graduation requirement.
