Types of Maryland Certificates
Maryland issues seven types of certificates. For employees of the Baltimore City Public School System (BCPSS), the Office of Certification acts as your liaison with the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE). Staff in our office will obtain, from you, all documents necessary to request your initial, reinstated, or renewed Maryland certificate.
Remember that ALL certificates have an issuance date of July 1 and January 1. If your employment begins between the dates of July 1 and December 31, you will have an issuance date of July 1. If your employment begins between the dates of January 1 and June 30, you will have an issuance dates of January 1.
1. Professional Eligibility Certificate (PEC) - Valid for 5 years
2. Standard Professional Certificate I (SPC I) - Valid for 5 years
3. Standard Professional Certificate II (SPC II) - Valid for 5 years
4. Extended Standard Professional Certificate II (ESPC II) - Valid for 3 years
5. Advanced Professional Certificate (APC) - Valid for 5 years
6. Resident Teacher Certificate (RTC) - Valid for 2 years effective 01/01/07

Conditional Certificate (CC) - Valid for 2 years

FAILURE TO SATISFY RENEWAL REQUIREMENTS OF YOUR PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATE WILL RESULT IN THE ISSUANCE OF A CONDITIONAL CERTIFICATE.
FAILURE TO SATISFY RENEWAL REQUIREMENTS OF YOUR CONDITIONAL CERTIFICATE WILL JEOPARDIZE YOUR EMPLOYMENT STATUS.
