Maxine Johnson Wood

Maxine Johnson Wood is a native of Baltimore, Maryland and a product of the Baltimore City public Schools. She is a graduate of the College of Notre Dame of Maryland (Bachelor of Arts) and Towson University, Towson, Maryland (Master of Education). Her Doctorate in Urban Education was earned at Temple University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.,
Maxine began her career in public education, as a high school history teacher, at the age of twenty, at Frederick Douglass High School, Baltimore, Maryland. She spent more than twenty years as an educator in the Baltimore City Public Schools, holding positions as a classroom teacher at middle and high school levels; a proposal developer/grants writer; coordinator for specially funded federal, state, and non-local programs; and an elementary school principal at two BCPSS schools.

A promotional opportunity allowed Maxine to join the Alexandria City Public Schools, Alexandria, VA, as an Executive Assistant to the Superintendent in July 1988. Later, she was promoted to Assistant Superintendent and to Executive Assistant Superintendent
Maxine served as the Acting Superintendent of the Alexandria City Public Schools for the 1994-95 school year, and was responsible for all aspects of the district’s operation, including staff, students, budget and finance, facilities, program planning and implementation, and School Board, community, parent and governmental relations.
Maxine joined the Talent Development High Schools (TDHS) program, Center for Social Organization of Schools, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD, in December 2001, as its Director of New School Development.
Currently, she serves as Chief Operating Officer (COO) for Site Development and Operations (TDHS).Her responsibilities include offering technical assistance to Superintendents and school leaders in understanding the comprehensive high school reform model and its utility and potential for addressing the critical needs of urban high schools..
Maxine is the mother of Monica G. Wood , CEO of MWPR, Inc ., a public relations firm, in Charlotte, NC, and Melissa Wood Bartholomew, a graduate of Western High School, is an attorney in Seattle ,WA.
Maxine believes that her work in public education, over the years, has prepared her well to assist, serve and support educators and others committed to meeting the mission and goals of the Baltimore City Public School System, as a member of the Board of School Commissioners.. For her, the investment in the education of children and youth has always been an enriching, rewarding and invaluable imperative. |
