Increase in the age of compulsory attendanceAll principals and assistant principals
For the 2017-18 school year, the required age for compulsory attendance has increased from 17 to 18. Any person with legal custody, care, and control of a 5- to 18-year-old child who fails to ensure that the child has regular school attendance may be subject to a misdemeanor charge in criminal court.
The families of all students entering grades 9 to 12 will receive a ParentLink call from the district office in the first week of August to inform them of this change. Schools are encouraged to use their own communication methods (e.g., school newsletters, text messages, social media, upcoming meetings, and letters) as the school year begins to raise awareness among students, families, staff, and partners. Schools should also refer to the attendance toolkit for best practices in encouraging strong attendance among all students. For questions, contact Sharone Brinkley-Parker in the Enrollment, Choice, and Transfers department at SBrinkleyParker@bcps.k12.md.us.Click here for other items in the May 25, 2017 Leadership Action Update.
