As students in Ms. Davy's 3rd-grade class at Holabird Elementary/Middle School look at a painting, she asks them to guess who they think the person is?
"A mean queen"
"A famous person"
Ms Davy explains that it's a self portrait of Frida Kahlo, the famous Mexican painter. The students then read a biography about Kahlo that touches on the illnesses, including polio, and injuries she experienced as a child and how they affected her art. They also learn about her marriage to another famous Mexican artist Diego Rivera.
Today's lesson is part of Hispanic Heritage Month, which celebrates Hispanic and Latino culture in the U.S. and runs from September 15 to October 15. The students practice their colors in Spanish. Then, using the same bright colors that Kahlo liked to use, they create their own beautiful self portraits.
