Confidentiality of student records
Please reinforce to all staff the importance of safeguarding the confidentiality and privacy of students records. All staff are legally required under the Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR) and the federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) to ensure the privacy of students’ information. The record may only be disposed of in a manner specifically approved by the CEO or designee. These records should not be placed in unsecured trash or recycling receptacles unless first rendered unrecognizable. All records shall be disposed of in such a manner as to protect any legally confidential information that might be included in the record, or other information which the employee deems necessary not to make public for City Schools purposes.
School leaders should ensure that all records currently at their schools are maintained until further guidance is communicated by the Student Records department in the Achievement and Accountability Office. Please email Student Records with questions.
