Opportunities for Public Comment on Portfolio Recommendations

  • City Schools is committed to transparent decision making and community engagement. The district consistently engages families and the broader public in critical decisions that affect school communities. Additionally, the closure or relocation of schools requires community input under Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR).

    On November 14, 2017, the Board of School Commissioners received Building a Portfolio of Schools: 2017-18 Review and Recommendations link opens PDF document, a report outlining recommendations resulting from the annual portfolio review. The Board anticipates voting on the recommendations at a special Board meeting on Tuesday, December 19, beginning at 6:00 p.m.

    The Board is providing two opportunities for the public to provide feedback on the recommendations prior to the vote:

    • Tuesday, November 28, 2017; 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
      Special session for public testimony

    • Tuesday, December 12, 2017; 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
      Public hearing

    Both the special session and public hearing will take place at the district office, 200 E. North Avenue, Baltimore 21202.

    The Board will also accept written comment on the portfolio review and recommendations until 5:00 p.m. on Friday, December 15, 2017. Comments should be sent to the Baltimore City Board of School Commissioners, 200 E. North Ave., Room 406, Baltimore, MD 21202, or email portfoliorecommendations@bcps.k12.md.us. In order for the Board legally to accept written comments, the sender must fully identify him- or herself in the submission.

    In addition, the Board will hold a work session with charter school operators on Tuesday, November 28, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the district office. The public is invited to attend, but there is no public comment at this session. 

    All the events noted above will be broadcast live on Education Channel 77 and streamed online.

    In addition to the events noted above, City Schools staff members will facilitate the following meetings for school communities directly affected by this year's portfolio recommendations. These meetings will be held at the named schools (unless otherwise noted) and provide individual school communities and staff members opportunities to gain more information about how the specific recommendation affects them and their school.
