Absences due to a death in the immediate family are excused. City Schools considers the following people as the student's immediate family when it comes to absences:
- parent or legal guardian
- aunt or uncle
- or any person who lives with the student
Students who suffer a loss in the immediate family may miss up to 3 days of school. If the family member's funeral or memorial services are held outside of Maryland, students may be granted additional excused absences by the principal.
The parent/guardian must provide documentation in order for the absence(s) to be marked excused. An obituary, newspaper announcement, death certificate or a parent note are acceptable forms of documentation.
