• 2014 My Word! Literary Festival

The Write Place would like to announce that the 2014 My Word! Literary Festival is off to a great start. In late March, Ms. Baumgartner’s fourth grade classes enjoyed a two-day visit with children’s author Erin Hagar, who taught them how to develop a character as the basis for a story.

In early April, the sixth grade R-Team learned self-expression through slam poetry with Femi the Dri Fish. Sixth- and seventh-graders on the O- and A-Teams signed up for pull-out workshops: personal essays with parent/author Marion Winik, freedom songwriting from the Civil Rights movement with parent/musician Bob Friedman and sonnets with poet Adam Robinson.

This week, even more writers will visit. Ms. Bock’s fourth graders will learn short fiction with children’s author Elisabeth Dahl. The seventh grade L-Team will spend a day with slam poet (and RPEMS alumnus!) David Ross. Parent/author Eden Unger-Bowditch is teaching short fiction as a pull-out workshop in sixth grade, and Bob Friedman will return to teach songwriting from the American Revolution to fifth graders.

Jali D, the Drum Talker, will present an assembly in May to first and second graders. He uses his African djembe drum to teach and engage students about literacy and the value of achievement.

Last fall, My Word! writers visited third and eight graders. Poets Alan Britt and Laura Shovan created great works with third graders, and parent/slam poet Gayle Danley spent an entire week in residency with each eighth grade team, which featured her own performance and a culminating performance by students.

The Write Place thanks all of the faculty and staff for their cooperation with the My Word! Festival and, of course, the Roland Park Public Annual Fund, our sponsor. Visit http://www.baltimorecityschools.org/domain/8100 for more information or to donate.
