Baltimore Education Coalition Holds State Funding Information Session (Date Postponed Until Further Notice)

The Baltimore Education Coalition is hosting an information session on Thurs., Dec. 16 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Digital Harbor High School (1100 Covington St. Baltimore, MD 21230). Dinner will be served followed by an information session about the upcoming state education budget. This is a valuable opportunity for school communities to become educated about the how state schools are funded, the current budget situation and communicate with other concerned school communities. Completion of PTD Behavioral REPI Scale
Pre-k to 2nd-grade teachers, please complete a PTD Behavioral REPI Scale for your students between Nov. 15 and Dec. 16.
All teachers of pre-k to 2nd-grade students should complete two Primary Talent Development Behavioral REPI (Readiness, Emergent, Progressing, Independent) Scales each year to identify student strengths and potential. The first scale will be available on Data Link starting Nov. 15. Please complete it by Dec. 16, and note that the second scale will be available in April.

College Application Update
Principals and high school counselors, please enter all college applications into ConnectEDU by Dec. 10.

Current student data is loaded, and there should not be any issues with access. If you come across problems while using ConnectEDU, please contact Michael O’Connor (email@example.com or call 757-222-1880). College application status reports will be pulled on Dec. 10.
Please note, Dec. 10 is also the third annual scholarship workshop at Morgan State University’s Student Center from 9 a.m. until 2: 30 p.m. A mailing was sent on Nov. 24 with a list of students in the top 10% of their senior class who are invited to the workshop. Senior class counselors are asked to chaperone and make sure each student completes their permission slip and the Morgan State University Release of Liability form. The Combined Charities Campaign Needs You
Principals, please make sure you have designated a Combined Charities coordinator for your school and CCC coordinators should be sure to complete all efforts on behalf of the campaign before Dec. 9.
Congratulations to all the schools and offices that have completed their efforts on behalf of the Combined Charities Campaign (CCC) so far. All schools should have a CCC coordinator designated. If a coordinator needs to be identified, principals should submit the name of their school’s representative to Carmine Holmes (email@example.com), Quianna Cooke (firstname.lastname@example.org) or Sylvia Hill (email@example.com). City Schools want to continue its tradition of excellence, recognizing the generous donations made by so many individuals in our schools and offices, so please make sure all donations are complete before Dec. 9.
Exciting New Initiative for Pre-K Students
Pre-k teachers, please complete the Pre-K at Play teacher survey before Mon., Dec. 6.
The Early Learning Office (ELO) is working on a brand new initiative to celebrate Baltimore City Public School’s commitment to early learning and world-class pre-k programs. The new initiative is called Pre-K at Play, a program through which all pre-k students attend field trips to Baltimore’s most treasured cultural, educational and athletic institutions. Pre-K at Play will take place on Fri., May 20, with the help of parents, volunteers and central office employees. The day of fun will begin at 8:30 a.m. with students walking or being bused to their field trip site. Play at the sites will take place from 9 to 10:30 a.m., followed by lunch until 11 a.m. Classes will arrive back at the schools at 11:30 a.m.
Pre-k teachers, please participate in this day of fun and learning with your great kids. On Mon., Nov, 29, the ELO will send a survey to teachers asking for field trip preferences. The survey should be submitted before Mon., Dec. 6. Principals are encouraged to support teachers in participating in this special opportunity and are also asked to remind teachers to submit their surveys before the deadline. College Access and Readiness Phase II--FAFSA
Principals and high school counselors, please sign up for FAFSA team training and complete your team plans by Dec. 3.
School staff members have completed much work with high school seniors on college applications. The second phase of college access and readiness is completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Every school has to develop a FAFSA team and turn in a team plan worksheet to Brianna McMullin (firstname.lastname@example.org) and Tom DeWire (email@example.com) by Dec. 3. Each member of the FAFSA team is required to attend a training session so they are able to provide hands-on help to families and students who are completing the FAFSA. The Excellence in Gifted and Talented Education (EGATE) School Awards Program
Principals interested in applying for the EGATE School Awards Program must submit an application by mail or in person by Dec. 3.
The Maryland State Department of Education Advisory Council on Gifted and Talented Education is sponsoring a school recognition program known as the Excellence in Gifted and Talented Education (EGATE) School Awards Program. Selected schools will receive state recognition and serve as models for other schools seeking to create excellent gifted and talented education programs. Please read this information and applicationif you are interested in having your school participate in the EGATE recognition program. Applications must be received by the Maryland State Advisory Council on Gifted and Talented Education by Dec. 3. Support Academically Advanced Students

Baltimore City Public Schools, academic leaders and education experts want to partner with the families of academically advanced students in a conversation about how those kids can be supported. The conversation will take place on Thurs., Dec. 2 at 6:00 p.m. in the Benjamin Banneker Room of the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute (1400 W Cold Spring Lane Baltimore, MD 21209). The event will offer families opportunities to share feedback on the current offerings for academically advanced students, and to learn about City Schools’ academic priorities and the gifted and talented education resources available to students in City Schools. Sick Leave Conversion
Employees, please complete all sick leave conversion sheets and return the forms to the Payroll Office by the close of business on Wed., Dec. 1.
On Wed., Nov. 24, City Schools employees will receive payroll envelopes containing sick leave conversion reports, an instruction memo and a request for sick leave conversion form that must be completed by the close of business on Wed., Dec. 1. A feature of this year’s conversion process is direct deposit availability for those employees who currently have it set up for their regular pay. Employees who receive a paper check for their regular pay will also receive a paper check for the conversion payment. Sick leave conversion payments will be disbursed on Dec. 10. Middle Grades Extended Learning Program
Principals, please apply for the Middle Grades Extended Learning program by Nov. 30.
The Office of Teaching and Learning is preparing for Phase II of the Middle Grades Extended Learning program. This program is open to all Title I students who scored at the basic level on the 2010 mathematics Middle School Assessment (MSA) and/or the 2010-11 mathematics Benchmark B assessment. Principals, please submit applications for the program before Nov. 30. A member of the Middle School Extended Learning team can work with principals to complete their applications. Schools that are chosen to participate in Phase II will receive $200 per student to use for resources and supplies that supports the math component as well as the project-based learning. Teacher stipends will be covered from another source of funding provided by the Office of Teaching and Learning. Preschool Early Childhood Accountability System (ECAS)
Principals, please ensure that appropriate ECAS data is collected on preschool and kindergarten students receiving special education and related services. Also note that the fall data collection timeframe is Nov. 15-30.
The Preschool Early Childhood Accountability System (ECAS) fulfills mandates of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA 2004), which requires that states report on the progress of preschool children with disabilities receiving special education and related services. Using the Work Sampling System (WSS) assessment, teachers must provide Status at Entry data for preschool special education students with an initial IEP. In addition, Progress at Exit data is collected at the end of a child’s kindergarten year, or sooner, if the goals on the IEP are met. Teachers must complete the appropriate age level WSS developmental checklist for each child as they enter and exit preschool special education services, including children receiving a single service, such as speech/language therapy. During collection periods in Nov., Feb. and May, Ronald Boozer, the ECAS facilitator, will notify each school of the children for whom ECAS data must be collected.
