    Nursing Assistant Program - Academy of Health Professions

    Students will gain knowledge and exposure for career decisions in the multidimensional field of Allied Health. The curriculum includes basic preparation in anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, mathematics, and related natural sciences. Topics covered in Nursing Assistant include medical terminology, introductions to health care/ medical careers, legal and ethical concerns, first aid, CPR, disease, basic patient care, human development, pain theory and control, pathology, rehabilitative and therapeutic theory and technique, wellness programming, training and conditioning concepts. Students must maintain an average of 80% or above in the capstone course as well as pass the final exam with an 80% or above. After successful completion of the course, students will be able to discuss in detail, the role of the nursing assistant, concepts of infection control, and patient/environmental safety.  In addition the student will be able to demonstrate direct patient care techniques as well as data collection and communication methods in order to become certified as a Certified Nursing Assistant/Geriatric Nursing Assistant (CNA/GNA).

    Pharmacy Technician Program - Academy of Health Professions

    Students will be able to work under the direct supervision of a licensed Pharmacist as a Pharmacy Technician. Students will be able to perform many pharmacy-related job duties including dispensing prescription drugs and other health care products to patients and working with doctor's offices and insurance companies to ensure correct medications are provided and payment is received. By the end of the program, students should successfully complete 160 internship hours and pass an approved Pharmacy Technician exam with an 80% or above.


    Emergency Medical Technician

    Students will be able to respond to emergency calls, perform certain medical procedures and transport patients to hospitals and other health care facilities in accordance with protocols and guidelines. They may work in an ambulance service, as part of a government-based service such as a fire or police department, or in other various organizations. Students will be trained to assess a patient's condition and to perform any emergency medical procedures that are needed to improve a patient's condition before and during transfer to an appropriate healthcare facility. Treatments include giving certain medications, performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation and defibrillation,controlling bleeding, preventing shock, splinting of bone fractures, maintaining a clear airway, and emergency childbirth. At the end of the their junior year, pending successful completion of pathway requirements (including maintaining a 75% testing average and the completion of a 12-hour emergency ambulance internship), students are eligible to take the Maryland Emergency Medical Responder certification exam. At the end of the senior year, pending successful completion of pathway requirements(including maintaining a 75% testing average and the completion of a 60-hour emergency ambulance internship), students are eligible to take the Maryland Emergency Medical Technician certification exam.

    Dental Assistant Program - Academy of Health Professions

    Students will be able to perform a variety of patient care, office, and laboratory duties in a dental office. Students will be able to take traditional as well as digital xrays, take alginate impressions, construct study cast models, and bleaching trays. Students will be able to sterilize equipment according to CDC regulations.  Students will also become proficient in four handed dentistry which will included instrument transfer, oral cavity evacuation and a variety moisture control isolation techniques.  In addition, students will become certified as a dental radiologist technician. As a dental assistant, students will be able to make patients comfortable in the dental chair and prepare them for treatment. During dental procedures, assistants will work alongside the dentist to provide assistance. Students will also instruct patients on postoperative care and general oral health care instructions. Graduates of the Dental Assistant Pathway will be eligible to sit for Infection Control, Chairside and Radiology Dental Assistant National Board examinations.

    Biomedical Sciences - Project Lead the Way

    Students will explore the concepts of Biomedical Science by exploring topics such as physiology, genetics, microbiology and public health. Through activities, like dissecting a heart, constructing pumps, and designing molecular configurations, students examine the processes, structures and interactions of the human body – a role comparable to that of biomedical professionals. They also explore the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases, working collaboratively to investigate and design innovative solutions to the health challenges of the 21st century such as fighting cancer with nanotechnology. Successful completion of the program by earning at least an 80% on the end-of-course assessments for all PLTW pathway course will make students eligible to apply to receive college credit for Stevenson University’s BIO 113 General Biology I: Cell Biology and Genetics.
