Dear Augusta Fells Savage Institute of Visual Arts Parents and Guardians,
The Augusta Fells Savage Institute of Visual Arts community is deeply saddened by the death of one of our teachers, Dante Carter who passed away unexpectedly. Mr. Carter was a beloved staff member that served as a football coach and mentor. Family and friends are currently making funeral arrangements, and I will share that information with you as it becomes available. Meantime, our thoughts remain with Mr. Carter’s family in this difficult time.
I want to share with you the steps we are taking to support our students and assist them with their grief. The Baltimore City Public Schools crisis team visited our school to talk to students and address their questions and concerns, and students who were particularly upset were given the opportunity to share their feelings one-on-one with crisis team members. The crisis team will also be available in the days ahead to meet, as needed, in small groups with students.

The well-being of our students and staff is our top priority, and we will continue to do all we can to help them during this difficult period.

Welcome back to the 2015-2016 school year! It is with great excitement and anticipation that we welcome many of you back and to greet others to our school community for the first time. As the principal of Augusta Fells Savage Institute of Visual Arts (AFSIVA), I can tell you personally that our school’s commitment to excellence is unsurpassed.
Student success is the goal of every staff member at AFSIVA. We believe with our new structure and dedication to high quality, research-based best practices, every student will learn to their full potential. We are prepared to offer time and support as needed. I ask for your support and participation in this effort by sending your child to school every day and assisting with the monitoring of their educational process.
We have an outstanding school, but I believe that we can always improve. As such, please continue to support our school through our Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) and take advantage of the numerous opportunities to volunteer. In order to achieve the maximum educational growth for your child, a collaborative partnership between you and our school is needed and encouraged. Your involvement with your child’s education is vital to his/her academic success.
Please note our school’s hours have changed! School will start promptly at 8:15 a.m. and will be dismissed at 3:35p.m. Our new hours include an additional 30 minutes of extended instruction for students.
Uniforms are on sale at the school! Please visit the school any weekday between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to buy uniforms
All parents are invited to attend our Welcome Back To School “Open House” on Wednesday, August 26, 2015 from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Students and parents/guardians can tour the building, meet the teachers, purchase uniforms, receive information about our programs, and much more. Dinner will also be served!
