Hello March Families and welcome to the 2012-2013 school year. I hope you all had time to relax and rejuvenate over the summer. It has been a pleasure meeting with many of our families this summer during the family orientation. I look forward to starting the school year off with a renewed sense of purpose.
Our data from last year indicates that we have a great deal of work to do. As a school, we were unsuccessful in meeting our AYP targets. Thus, our challenge remains to bring students to a level in which they can comfortably and competently demonstrate mastery on standards.
To address this challenge, we have made several organizational changes for the upcoming school year. First, students will be organized into two interdisciplinary teams (IDTs). The Morgan Bears will be lead by Mr. McMillion and Ms. Berry. The Crimson Tide will be led by Ms. Vinson and Ms. Melton.
Second, our revised curriculum will include elements of Talent Development, International Baccalaureate, AVID, and Common Core. The goal is to create an environment in which students are exposed to and master standards while developing a skill set that will assist them in high school and beyond. We believe in the potential of March students. Thus, we have focused on building strong teams and adopting a can-do spirit to ensure that students receive the academic, social, and emotional support needed to enhance achievement.
Third, we have added several clubs and extension activities to our instructional program. Our students have expressed an interest in having a strong extra-curricular program. We have answered that call! Students will have an opportunity to participate in interscholastic sports, intramural sports, and a variety of clubs and programs after school.
Finally, our elective classes will consist of PE, Spanish, the Math Acceleration Lab, and the Savvy Reading Lab. All students will participate in PE/Health every other day. Students will be assigned to math and reading labs based upon MSA scores. We are committed to providing our students with multiple opportunities for remediation and/or enhancement.
I am very excited about the upcoming school year and look forward to your witnessing your child S.O.A.R!
