Dear Parents and Guardians,

On behalf of the staff at Arundel, I am happy to welcome you to the 2015-16 school year! We are looking forward to a successful school year. Our new school motto is: “Unleashing Our Potential: We’re Destined for Greatness.” We are eager in helping your child achieve his or her highest potential. We know a strong partnership with you will make a great difference in your child’s education. We ask that you support the learning process by ensuring your child: 1) Attends school daily, arrives on time, in uniform, ready to work, listen and learn, 2) Adheres to the school’s behavior and academic expectations, 3) Completes daily classwork and homework assignments, 4) Informs you of needed additional support in any subject and 5) Knows that you expect excellence in school.

Schools will open for scholars on Monday, August 31st. Our bell time is 8:00 a.m.-2:40 p.m. All scholars will enter and exit through the back doors of the school building. Scholars in Kindergarten-4th grade will enter and exit through the back door across from the main office. Scholars in 5th-8th grade will enter and exit through the back door closer to Veronica Avenue. Scholars in Kindergarten-4th grade will be dismissed from their designated blacktop number. Scholars in Pre-K will enter and exit through their classroom doors. Staff will begin supervising students on the blacktop at 7:45 am. In the case of inclement weather, scholars may sit in the cafeteria/auditorium. The back door across from the main office will open at 7:50 a.m.

Breakfast will be served in the classroom during homeroom from 8:00-8:10 a.m. Arundel EMS will remain a uniform school. Scholars in PreK-4th grade should wear burgundy collared shirts and tan khaki bottoms. Scholars in 5th-8th grade should wear navy blue collared shirts and tan khaki bottoms. Monthly and quarterly incentives will be given to scholars who wear their uniform and have perfect attendance. Monthly incentives will be given to parents when their child attends school everyday, on time. Your continued support and cooperation is appreciated! Uniform shirts, pants and sweaters will be available for sale in the main office beginning August 17th.

Each scholar and their parent or guardian will be expected to attend a mandatory orientation on Wednesday, August 12th (Pre-K and K 9:00-9:30 am; 1st and 2nd Grade 10:00-10:30 am; 3rd-5th Grade 11:00-11:30 am and 6th-8th Grade 12:00-12:30 pm). Light refreshments will be served and each person will receive a free raffle ticket to win one of many prizes at the end of the orientation. Our annual Meet Your Teacher Day will be held on Friday, August 28th from 2:00-2:30 p.m. Back to School Night will be held on Tuesday, September 15th from 5:00-7:00 p.m. During Back to School Night, you will learn about our initiatives for the upcoming school year, have an opportunity to meet staff and receive updates about the 21st Century School Buildings scheduled to be built in Cherry Hill.

The Visitor Management System will continue this school year. Per district policy, each visitor to Arundel must show a driver’s license or state ID to be registered once the system is active. Visitors will sign in and receive a badge to wear while in the building during every visit. We ask that you comply with the new policies to keep our scholars and staff safe. In the event that a visitor does not cooperate with the new district policy, school police will be contacted and the visitor may be banned from the school building. Early dismissals will not be granted after 2:00 pm and visitors will not be allowed to enter the building after 2:00 p.m. These policies will help decrease the amount of movement during last period as our scholars will be engaged in instruction until 2:35 p.m.

During the school day, I will be visiting classrooms to work with students and teachers. I ask that you respect the instructional time and request to meet with me before 7:45 am or after 3:00 pm. Ms. Crawford, the secretary will take your name, phone number and reason for meeting. You will receive a call at the end of the school day to schedule a meeting with me.

Please consider joining our school volunteer program as our scholars can greatly benefit from your involvement and contributions to the school’s program and its operations. Mrs. Clea will act as the parent liaison and volunteer coordinator this school year. If you have any questions, concerns or would like to volunteer, please stop by the main office to speak to Mrs. Clea. We are seeking volunteers to help us with the following activities: 1) Small group instruction support, 2) Reading with children who need extra help, 3) School-wide events, 4) Student recognition events and 5) Outreach and recruitment of parent and community volunteers.

I feel privileged to serve as principal for another year in this school community. I thank you for your support and look forward to participating in the educational process with you. Our #1 priorities are safety and education. As partners, we will promote excellence, increase student achievement and recognize positive behavior. We will work as a team to move our school forward! Enjoy the remainder of your summer. I will see you in August!
