Community Schools
Purpose
Community Schools are schools where community partners, public agencies and the schools jointly provide - before, during and after the school day - a range of educational and developmental services and opportunities for students, their families and the broader community. Community Schools aim to address the non-academic needs that impact academic achievement, student attendance and school safety. Services are sought to meet the identified needs of each particular school community.
Goals:
- Establish partnerships between public, private, government and community agencies based on identified school and community need.
- Develop the school’s capacity to work with families and community residents.
- Involve community members and represent community interests in school planning and problem solving.
- Connect community school initiative to other system initiatives, such as safety and school climate plan, attendance team, family engagement, SST development, etc.
- Partner with outside agencies on funding proposals.
- Improve connection of children, families, school and community to one another.
- Develop education and community coalitions to ensure shared accountability.
- Increase access to services in the areas of youth development, physical and mental health and workforce development.
- Provide increased opportunities for family involvement & engagement and student academic enrichment.
Master Plan Alignment: 2006-2008
- Goal 4: All students will be educated in learning environments that are safe, drug-free, and conducive to learning.
