Grade 6
Sixth grade students should be competent readers and writers. They continue to develop and enrich their skills in language arts and mathematics. By the end of this grade, students are expected to have mastered all of the skills needed to pass the Maryland functional tests in mathematics, reading, and writing. Science includes concepts of life, earth/space, and physical science. In social studies, students learn about the history and current structure of the United States government.

- Be sure your son/daughter attends school regularly and is on time.

- Talk with your son/daughter each day. Discuss a variety of topics, including current events, school activities, books you have both read, etc.
- Praise your son/daughter.
- As a family, participate in community environmental activities (e.g., clean block campaigns, recycling, park restoration).
- As a family, watch and discuss educational programs on television.
- Take your son/daughter to visit museums and other educational attractions (e.g., Maryland Science Center, National Aquarium at Baltimore, Baltimore Museum of Art).
