Grade 1

The first grade instructional program emphasizes skills related to phonics and comprehension. It is expected that children will be readers and writers by the end of the year. In mathematics and science, instruction focuses on investigations, problem solving, concepts, and applications. Social studies instruction addresses concepts related to family life. Manuscript writing is emphasized.

How You Can Help

• Be sure your child eats breakfast and comes to school ready to learn.
• Read to your child at least 15 minutes a day.
• Sing songs and recite nursery rhymes with your child.
• Talk with your child about signs and words on labels, jars, and packages.
• Encourage your child when he or she tries to read and write.
• Talk about everyday happenings. Explain what you are doing and how things work.
• Let your child help with chores that include counting, sorting, measuring and cooking.
• Encourage your child to listen and follow directions. Be sure your child attends school regularly and is on time.
• Help your child resolve conflicts positively
