New Teacher Summer Institute and New Teacher Orientation/Support
New Teacher Training and Support
The New Teacher Summer Institute is designed to help beginning and veteran teachers new to City Schools acquire knowledge and skills needed to experience a successful induction period. A paid pre-employment program usually taking place in July and/or August, the New Teacher Summer Institute provides practical strategies in a host of areas, including lesson planning, preparation, and instruction; creation of student portfolios; classroom management and discipline; and communication with parents. Participants are grouped by the grade level and/or content area that they will teach.
New Teacher Mentoring
New teachers come to Baltimore City from a variety of different backgrounds and with vastly different experience and degrees of preparation. Mentoring represents one of the primary means of support for all new teachers. Different types of mentoring are provided based on the needs of the school where the new teacher will be teaching. The highest priority schools (as defined by the number of new teachers) receive either full-time or part-time mentors. Remaining teachers are paired with central office staff members who spend several hours a week assisting the new teachers. Every new teacher receives the services of an experienced professional who can help him or her adjust to a new career.
