Alternative Certification Programs
Alternative certification programs afford individuals with non-education degrees the opportunity to work towards certification while teaching full-time. The BCPSS has a working partnership with three alternative route programs, - the Baltimore City Teaching Residency, the Resident Teacher Certificate Program in Secondary Special Education, and Teach for America. Each program has a separate application and selection process.
- The Baltimore City Teaching Residency is designed to attract outstanding individuals to teach in Baltimore City classrooms while they earn their teaching credentials and develop themselves as teachers. The program's design gives the Residents the broadest possible exposure to the field of education while simultaneously preparing them for their specific teaching assignments. Selected candidates receive significantly reduced, sometimes even waived, tuition fees and free professional coaching. The Baltimore City Public School System’s RTC Special Education Program is partnered with Goucher College.
