Alternative Certification Programs

Alternative certification programs afford individuals with non-education degrees the opportunity to work towards certification while teaching full-time. The BCPSS has a working partnership with three alternative route programs, - the Baltimore City Teaching Residency, the Resident Teacher Certificate Program in Secondary Special Education, and Teach for America. Each program has a separate application and selection process.

  • The Baltimore City Teaching Residency is designed to attract outstanding individuals to teach in Baltimore City classrooms while they earn their teaching credentials and develop themselves as teachers. The program's design gives the Residents the broadest possible exposure to the field of education while simultaneously preparing them for their specific teaching assignments. For more information and to apply, go to:http://bcteachingresidency.org/. Click on http://bcteachingresidency.org/process.html to access our direct online application. We can also be reached by email at info@baltimorecityteachingresidency.org
  • Resident Teacher Certificate (RTC) Program in Secondary Special Education
The Maryland State Department of Education, in collaboration with Maryland colleges and universities, has designed an alternative-route certification program to attract and train recent college graduates and mid-career professionals who are interested in teaching Maryland children with special needs.
  • Participants teach, earning a full teacher’s salary, while they are completing course-work and in-service training toward full certification. Selected candidates receive significantly reduced, sometimes even waived, tuition fees and free professional coaching. The Baltimore City Public School System’s RTC Special Education Program is partnered with Goucher College.

RTC Requirements

Secondary candidates must:

  • hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution,
  • have 36 credit hours in a discipline appropriate to an assignment in the secondary school curriculum,
  • have 3.0 GPA in qualifying courses,
  • have passing scores for Maryland on PRAXIS I and PRAXIS II (content only) at the time of application, and
  • Successfully complete the interview process.

How to Apply to the RTC Program

If you meet the aforementioned requirements, you may apply by going to www.baltimorecityschools.org and completing the on line application for a teaching position.

  • Teach for America is a national program nonprofit organization that recruits high achieving seniors and recent graduates from top colleges and universities and asks them to commit themselves to two years of teaching in inner-city or rural schools. TFA currently supplies teachers to 18 districts across the country, including Baltimore. For more information and to apply go to: www.teachforamerica.org/flash_movie.html
