Welcome to the 2016-2017 School Year!

Welcome back to our returning students and welcome aboard to our new students. We hope that you experienced a productive summer that included some rest and relaxation.  We will have a staggered opening for our students this year.  Every student is expected to be in full uniform (scrubs; top and bottom and shoes that cover the entire foot). The full student body will be reporting by Thursday, September 1, 2016.  The staggering of students is as follows:

·         9th and 12th graders: report on Monday, August 29, 2016 at 7:45 – 2:35

·         11th graders: report on Tuesday, August 30, 2016 at 7:45 – 2:35

·         10th graders: report on Wednesday, August 31, 2016 at 7:45 – 2:35

Our school theme is “Healing Ourselves, Our Community and Our World”

We are looking forward to a challenging yet rewarding school year while continuing to focus on moving forward with the Common Core and the PARCC Assessments.

At Vivien T. Thomas Medical Arts Academy, our greatest priority is meeting the diverse needs of our students. We are committed to learning our students’ strengths, their passions, and their needs. With these perspectives, we will be better able to move our students forward.  With this being said, we expect each one of our students to put forth his/her best to take advantage of the great opportunities given to them so that they will be success and productive students and citizens.

At Vivien T. Thomas, we will continue working on literacy and mathematics.  In an effort to support these aspects, we will concentrate on attendance.  We want to ensure that our students are safe and in a great learning environment. We will be preparing you to be College and Career Ready as stated in our vision and mission statements.

Our bell schedule has changed to 75 minute periods but the school day is still 7:45 a.m. – 2:35 p.m. There will not be any transitioning on the first floor of the building. We are continuing this procedure because it places students closer to their teachers, minimizes student movement, and maximizes instructional time.

I am very excited about our plans for the upcoming school year. Together, I am convinced that we will make a significant difference in your achievement levels and in your attitudes towards learning as well as in your future potential. In spite of the many challenges, we are making progress. Again, welcome to what will be a defining year for our school.

Sincerely,

Stephanie Farmer

Principal
